What I love to read

Last Friday I finished a book by one of my favorite authors, Beverly Jenkins (http://www.beverlyjenkins.net). It's the third installment in her Destiny series that features the Yates family, and it was wonderful. If you enjoy historical romance, Destiny's Captive is a must read!

Whenever I finish one book, I go directly to the To Be Read folder I've set up on my Kindle and chose my next read. In the past ten years, I've met hundreds of authors through in person and online contact, and even though I'd love to, it's impossible to read all of them.

One of my author buddies I was anxious to read was Delaney Diamond  (http://www.delaneydiamond.com). We met at a Georgia Romance Writers meeting and have had lunch together. I picked her book Unforgettable, as my next choice.

This book has a sexy hero and an independent, smart heroine facing a personal dilemma that relates to family. I'm only 35% into the story so far, but as I read, I realized that beyond my love of romance I really adore stories about families. Unforgettable is the first book in Delaney's Johnson Family series, and I already know that she has me locked in to buy the other books.

The family dynamic always fascinates me, and as an author, it provides additional opportunity for drama besides that between the hero and heroine. People are the product of their environment, and a character's family life can make a story so much more interesting.

I'm having a ball writing Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Book Three in my Stafford brothers series (https://www.facebook.com/StaffordBrothersNovels). I love this family. In this book, readers will meet Greg, the brother with an embarrassing problem.

As I get ready for the holidays and prepare to have our extended crew for Thanksgiving, I thought I'd share these quotes with you...

Happy or unhappy, families are all mysterious. We have only to imagine how differently we would be described - and will be, after our deaths - by each of the family members who believe they know us.

A family is a place where principles are hammered and honed on the anvil of everyday living.

New Release Preview - James Fant

It always makes me happy when one of my online author buddies has a new release. I love to see my friends being productive and sharing their thoughts and ideas with the world.

James Fant is an award winning author who lives in Charleston, SC with his lovely wife and two hilarious children. When he’s not reading everything from business management to mysteries or “entertaining” his family with piano solos and spoken word, James writes inspirational romance and suspense that warms the heart and hopefully makes readers laugh—in public.

Today I'm giving you a little peek at James Fant's upcoming novel, and I asked him three question about the subject matter - Marriage, Cohabitation, and SIMON’S SPLINTER.

Three Questions for Author James Fant

Question: What is the premise for your upcoming novel SIMON’S SPLINTER and why did you write it?

Answer: The novel is about Owen Graham, a man who never wants to get married. His girlfriend, Aisha Elian, says she’s cool with that but she’s lying to herself and Graham. Enter Simon’s Splinter. Aisha’s family believes that they are descendants of Simon of Cyrene. Also, they possess a splinter that—they insist—was pulled from Simon’s hand after he carried the cross for Jesus. If the splinter resides in their home, it will give them what they desire. Aisha wants to marry Graham. But will she use the splinter’s power to do it…even when she thinks it is killing him?

I wrote the novel as a result of a crazy what if question—essentially, what if Simon of Cyrene had descendants that actually had a splinter from the same cross on which Jesus was crucified. What crazy things can happen in a story like that? Also, I wanted to look at cohabitation and the reasons that a couple would choose to live together long-term without getting married. After much study, I saw that the reasons varied from the convenience of sharing expenses to “test driving the car” so to speak. Some cases, as is the case of the novel, either one or both of the parties just don’t see the need in making it legal in the eyes of the law.

Question: How did you become interested in the topic of cohabitation and marriage?

Answer: My mother lived with her second husband for several years before they got married. It was like one month he had his own apartment, the next month, he was moving into ours. To each his own, but as I grew up, that’s just not something I desired for myself. I wondered why my mother and step-father lived together for so long before they tied the knot. If one were to say to strengthen their marriage because they were able to get to know one another, they’d be wrong because they later divorced. Some people can make it work. For others, cohabitation can end in disaster. My uncle recently passed away and his long-time, live in girlfriend, with whom he had a child, really had no say in the way his last days were handled or even his funeral. Some denounce marriage because they say they aren’t spiritual. The novel touches on this but offers a counter for cohabitants who love each other. Love, in itself, is very spiritual.

Question: What did you hope to accomplish by publishing your novel SIMON’S SPLINTER?

Answer:  As an inspirational author, and a writer who strives to inspire people to have the best relationships possible, I hope that I can inspire someone to be completely honest with themselves and their significant other about what they want out of a relationship without fear of rejection. I hope that I spread the message that change can sometimes be a marvelous thing. Lastly, I hope to impress upon readers that when it comes to being in love, strange things can happen when someone gets under your skin.

His third novel, SIMON’S SPLINTER, will be available on Kindle, Nook, and Paperback on 11/28/14. Please visit the Website http://jamesfantbooks.com for more details.

Will one kiss seal their love?

Accepting Logan’s marriage proposal was the most exciting event of Lorna’s life. But deciding in what country to marry her fiancé proved to be more than a tearful ordeal. When Lorna’s dad announced unexpected news, the wedding wheels spun in a different direction.

With other family members stirring conflict, would there be a wedding? Or would their shared kiss deepen their desire?

Kiss My Lips – Excerpt

          The doorbell sounded.

Lorna lifted her teary face out of her aunt's arms. "Who else are you expecting this morning? You’ve got more surprises in store for me, Auntie?"
Instead of answering the question, her aunt glanced at her brother.

"Please get the door, Kanu. I'll quickly get changed. Make my guest welcome, will you?"

Lorna looked from the woman rushing off to her father, who was striding towards the front door. She plucked out a handful of tissue from her bag, wiped off streaks of wet mascara and sat on the black leather bar stool by the kitchen island. She poured herself a glass of mango juice and was sipping the drink when her father came back with Logan in tow.

The glass slipped out of her right fingers but she rescued it with her left hand. Her stomach muscles contracted. Her feet rushed ahead and she threw herself into Logan's outstretched arms.

He scented of warm balsam. She inhaled as her head rested on the hard plane of his chest wall. Pure joy leaked out of her heart, flooding her entire body. The arms holding her were all taut muscle and strength. She wrapped her arms round his black silk shirt and burst into tears.

"Maybe I should leave you two," her father excused, walking in the direction of the second guest bedroom through the hallway.

Logan guided his fiancée to the pale green, moriko leaf upholstered sofa. He sat down and pulled her to sit across his thighs.

Lorna sobbed.

Logan let her cry. From time to time, he wiped her face.

Through her tears, she saw a tiny trickle of moisture drop down one lane on his cheek. "Are you crying, Logan?" she asked, not quite sure he understood her pain. She wiped one finger over the wetness and then, she saw another small tear, drop out of his right eye.

With her face only inches from his, Lorna kissed his half-parted lips. The kiss was raw and hungry as her tongue dived into his mouth, demanding and taking. Her nipples stiffened in her body-hugging top and she pressed her breasts into his torso.
Logan's arms crashed around her shoulders and the chiseled wall of his chest teased her nipples taut. Wild fire raged as his tongue dipped into her mouth, taking control and sending flickers of burning heat through her thighs.

"Your dad and aunt are here, sweetheart. Do you want me to show them how much you mean to me?" Logan's sensible words brought her back to her aunt's living room. She leaned her head on his forehead.

"When I saw the tear drop from your eye, fireworks exploded in my chest. You cried with me, Logan," she said in awe.

"Did I?" Logan shrugged, running one finger across her lips. "Love is a strange emotion, Lorna. Your pain is my pain and your joy is mine."
